Butter chicken

Delhi O’ Delhi, Newtown

Delhi 'O' Delhi on Urbanspoon My favourite Indian restaurant in Sydney has to be Delhi O’ Delhi. The food is always impressive and incredibly good value; the ‘house special’ banquet is just $34 per person and you get to choose four mains (excluding seafood)! I recently organised a staff dinner here as I wanted to share the joy with my colleagues. Plus it’s halal, caters to vegetarians and those with dietary restrictions, plus it’s BYO and licensed – a fantastic place for a large group.

The house banquet comes with three entrees, pictured below: beetroot vada, awadhi (lamb) kebab and basil and olive chicken tikka.

Beetroot vada

All had a satisfying combination of textures and flavours. The awadhi kebab was the most memorable, with a real hit of green cardamom balancing the meatiness of the lamb. Apparently the mince is smoked before being shaped into patties and fried, which really intensifies the flavour. Lovely.

For the mains, we went with butter chicken, duck kuraval, malai kofta and chatpata baigan (baby eggplant curry).

Unfortunately the wine was flowing so fast and freely that I forgot to photograph the eggplant. I remember it tasted amazing though! All silky and slippery, with flavours of cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. The butter chicken was a huge hit, rich and smooth and mild enough for those who don’t do chilli. The duck karuval is absolutely heavenly, and my favourite; coconutty, rich and juicy.

And the naan was incredibly good! So flaky, delicate and buttery – declared best naan ever. (Again, I’m afraid the wine interfered with the naan photography.)

The gulab jamun (by special request!) was the perfect end to the meal. Each soft, squishy deep-fried dumpling was soaking in delicately spiced rosewater syrup, and topped with an ultra fine sprinkling of pistachio. Love! Love dumplings!

To top it all off, Javed is the most helpful and friendly host you could wish for. In fact all of the staff are fantastic – as one of my colleagues put it, “there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for you”. :)
