Pork belly & ribs stewed in orange, soy and spices

This is my mum’s best classic, comforting winter dinner dish and a firm family favourite. It fills the house with an incredibly enticing, warming fragrance from the star anise, cinnamon and orange, and reminds me of the happiest moments of my childhood. The pork is stewed until incredibly tender, so that the fat just melts in the mouth and the meat is worthy of ‘pulling’ pork status. The ribs are a treat for those who aren’t into pork fat (i.e. crazy people, and my sister). Continue reading »

Al Carbón @ La Lupita Pop-Up Restaurant, Canterbury

In general, I’m not into pop-ups, food trucks and other trendy things. However, I do love good food, and am always willing to try something new. So when I heard that the home of the famed Al Carbón food truck was just up the road from me in Canterbury, and that it was (occasionally) home to a pop-up restaurant called La Lupita, I was intrigued to try it. Yen For Viet, Marrickville – Take 2

Mr Black and I first visited Yen For Viet when it was brand new (see my first post here). Since then we’ve been back a few times – when we can get a table! Even on a weeknight they’re pretty busy, and deservedly so. Their food is excellent quality and, while not as cheap a most places on the Illawarra Rd strip, is still fantastic value. They are both BYO and licenced, which is great because there are no bottle shops anywhere nearby! Continue reading »

Baby strawberry, vanilla and maple syrup teacakes

Baby strawberry, vanilla & maple syrup teacakes

I love reading all the amazing posts from the Sweet Adventures Blog Hop, but never planned to join in, being such a lame dessert maker. However my brother Marc gave me a massive tub of the most delicious, sweet little strawberries today, so I though I’d join in this month’s Berry Nice To Meet You blog hop. Continue reading »

Confit duck dumplings fried in duck fat

I am obsessed with few things in life, but duck and dumplings are definitely two of them. While shopping for ingredients to make dumplings the other evening, I had the GENIUS idea to combine the two. Even more brilliant, I got my friends to help make them! They didn’t quite turn out quite as prettily as my usual dumplings (I’ve had a lot of practice) but it was great fun. We also made some spinach and tofu Ladakhi mokmok (aka momos in Tibet or Nepal), which I’ll post separately for the vegematarians :)

Chicken wih pedro ximenez sherry and vinegar

Chicken with Pedro Ximenez sherry and vinegar

Growing up, my dad used cooking sherry in many dishes including my favourite honey soy chicken wings. Consequently I now adore the fragrance of sherry and love experimenting with using it in a variety of dishes. Pedro Ximenez is a type of grape traditionally used to make sweet, rich sherry. I recently also bought a vinegar made from the PX sherry. I absolutely love the flavour and use it whenever I can! Continue reading »

Food Bloggers’ “Fancy French Dinner Party” at Atelier Restaurant, Glebe

It finally happened…

After nearly three years of food blogging, last June I managed to attend a food blogger event! The food bloggers’ #fancyfrenchdinnerparty was held at Restaurant Atelier, a gorgeous little sandstone cottage in Glebe. It is just the kind of place at which I would love to have a special dinner or event – I could even imagine having our wedding reception here, if we hadn’t already planned one! Continue reading »

Gujarati Shrikhand - spiced yoghurt dessert

Gujarati Shrikhand – spiced yoghurt dessert

As part of our recent Indian Christmas in July party, my beautiful and talented foodie friend Sal (of Sassy Bites catering) offered to bring a dessert. Expecting sticky sweet gulab jamun, or perhaps some kind of kulfi, I was surprised and intrigued when I spied these beautiful little ramekins of spiced yoghurt – aren’t they beautiful!
