Shopping in Campsie the other day, Mr Black and I needed a food fix. We headed to the nearest busy-looking dive we could find – Van Loi. Or, as it’s called on Urbanspoon, Van Loc. As far as I can tell they are one and the same place!
Mr Black had a very scrummy stir-fried beef with lemongrass, topped with loads of crispy fried shallots, crushed peanuts and accompanied by rice (half plain, half tomato rice) and a sweet nuoc mam dipping sauce. And it was only $10! Bargain.
We shared a serve of green veg between us which was hot, crunchy and full of earthy deliciousness. Very good greens.
I went with their standard beef pho, which was good, but not quite in the same category as the heady comforting bowl of steaming goodness at Pho Bac Hai Duong. The fresh crunchy add-ins didn’t have the same variety of fragrant herbs I’m used to having either. At $7 though, I wasn’t complaining! Plus it was HUGE!
While I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there, I will say that Van Loi is a great, cheap and satisfying spot to grab a meal when in Campsie. And the ladies who work there are very funny and friendly too!
