  • Jack and the Beanstalk Cafe, Dulwich Hill

    December 23, 2012

Jack and the Beanstalk on UrbanspoonThis cute new cafe has just opened up on Marrickville Road where Fernandes Patisserie used to be, right near our other old favourite Minh Vietnamese Restaurant. (Fernandes is now round the corner on New Canterbury Rd.) We’ve been there twice and have been really impressed. The coffee is excellent, the staff are delightful, and – the food is good too! Trifecta!

    Moon's Sushi on Urbanspoon

Dulwich Hill is a fabulous suburb to live in, with Vietnamese, Thai, Lebanese, Pakistani, Chinese and Portuguese restaurants, plus plenty of excellent cafes, delis, butchers and patisseries. There are times, however, that I simply need sushi. So I am very very happy to announce that Dulwich Hill now has its own sushi restaurant! Continue reading →

  • Confit duck dumplings fried in duck fat

    August 20, 2012

I am obsessed with few things in life, but duck and dumplings are definitely two of them. While shopping for ingredients to make dumplings the other evening, I had the GENIUS idea to combine the two. Even more brilliant, I got my friends to help make them! They didn’t quite turn out quite as prettily as my usual dumplings (I’ve had a lot of practice) but it was great fun. We also made some spinach and tofu Ladakhi mokmok (aka momos in Tibet or Nepal), which I’ll post separately for the vegematarians 🙂

Dumpling King on UrbanspoonIt had been a while since Mr Black and I had paid a visit to Dumpling King. We were looking forward to some old favourites: eggplant in chilli sauce and northern style fried dumplings. Continue reading →

  • Yum cha at The Dynasty, Canterbury Leagues Club, Belmore

    March 15, 2011

The Dynasty on UrbanspoonAnother Sunday, another yum cha. This weekend we decided to take my step-dad to yum cha at Canterbury Leagues Club in Belmore, near where I work. Despite having worn forbidden footwear, I was allowed in eventually after swapping my lovely, clean, dainty Havaianas for a pair of my step-dad’s velcro strappy sandals. Which looked ridiculous, but at least the bouncers would let me in. (Such a stupid, archaic rule!) Continue reading →

Hung Cheung Chinese Seafood on Urbanspoon

Now that Mr Black has fallen in love with yum cha, we have been going at least once a month. Happy days! There’s no better way to start a lazy day than sipping tea and taking a chance on the yum cha trolley roulette (or ‘tray’ roulette in this case). Continue reading →

  • New Shanghai Chinese Restaurant, Ashfield

    February 6, 2011

So, I have blogged about New Shanghai before. However, the last time I went – this Chinese New Year – we were a larger group and had the opportunity to try some new dishes. Of course, we had all the classic dumplings – Shanghai style fried pork dumplings, steamed vegetable dumplings, xiao long bao (plus ginger – extra 50c) and boiled pork and coriander dumplings. • Yum cha at Marigold Citymark, Haymarket

    January 24, 2011

Marigold Citymark on Urbanspoon I have been going to yum cha since I can remember. My Chinese step-grandfather, know affectionately as “grandad”,  grew up in an Australia where he couldn’t embrace and celebrate his Chinese heritage. So since I was a toddler, my mum, step-dad, brother, sister and I would take him to yum cha for every occasion we could. Back in my day (the eighties) we used to go to Regal or Marigold on Sussex St. They were both HUGE and awe-inspiring with soaring ceilings and an incredible atmosphere. Chinese New Year at either place was a crazy, noisy, insane experience! Continue reading →

  • HuTong Dumpling Bar, Melbourne

    HuTong Dumpling Bar on Urbanspoon

HuTong was one of many on my Melbourne wishlist, and yet we ended up there by accident. On our way from Cookie (for drinks) to Pellegrini’s (for dinner) we looked down an alleyway and saw Flowerdrum, which I knew was opposite HuTong Dumplings. Being a little “bien”, hot and hungry, we turned down the alley and took our chance that they’d have a table for two even though it was 8pm on a Thursday night. Continue reading →

    Dumpling Sisters on Urbanspoon

On our first afternoon in Melbourne we arrived at 4pm, hungry and desperate for something quick and tasty. Around the corner from our apartment we found Dumpling Sisters, with a menu full of old favourites like xiao long bao and Zhajiang mian (Shanghai style noodles with pork mince and cucumber). Tables ready with chilli oil and black vinegar were a welcome sight! Continue reading →
