  • Pork and eggplant adobo

    June 28, 2012

This is one of my absolute favourite comfort dishes. It’s perfect for when you have no fresh vegies, and are feeling unwell or tired, and need something warming and hearty. (Tick, tick and tick!) The ingredients might not sound exciting, but trust me, this dish is more than the sum of its parts!  Continue reading →

  • Lamb shanks braised with pomegranate, balsamic, tomato and bay

    Featured

I got some lovely lamb shanks at the Addison Road Markets today and was feeling indecisive about how to flavour them. Preserved lemon? Red wine and bay leaves? Lemongrass and star anise? Continue reading →

  • Dragon Den, Darlinghurst

    June 17, 2012

I recently organised a birthday dinner for two of my loveliest friends at Dragon Den, near the Green Park Hotel in Darlinghurst. Planning a dinner for 20 odd people is not always easy, but the staff at Dragon Den were amongst the most helpful, accommodating and flexible I’ve encountered (along with Javed and the team at Delhi O’ Delhi). • Lontong with sate, cucumber and deep fried shallots

    Featured

My Malaysian aunty first made lontong for me ten years ago, and I’ve loved them ever since. In Indonesia and Malaysia they are served alongside grilled meat skewers along with chunks of cucumber and sate sauce. When trying to create a vegetarian alternative to my favourite chicken sate skewers, these delicious little pressed rice cakes came to mind. They turned out to be the star of the evening! • Mut jup mun gai yik (a.k.a. honey soy chicken wings) and a lovely riesling

These sticky wings are absolutely divine and incredibly popular with young and old alike. According to my parents, this has been my favourite food since before I could talk! Continue reading →

  • Izote Mexican Restaurant, Newtown

Izote Mexican on Urbanspoon I would never claim to be an expert (or anywhere near it) when it comes to Mexican or South American cuisine. My only experience of either outside of restaurants was when my family lived in an apartment above a Brazilian couple when I was 9 or 10. I remember they made some delicious food, including a cracking creme caramel, but my memory ends there! Continue reading →

Zenobia on UrbanspoonZenobia is a Lebanese restaurant set in a lovely sandstone house on Norton St. The other night my dad, brother and I popped in on the spur of the moment and happily found a table free for us. Continue reading →

  • Baja Cantina, Glebe

Baja Cantina on UrbanspoonWe arrived at Baja Cantina hungry and excited – I was looking forward to trying the mole here – I love love LOVE Izote’s version. Unfortunately we found the staff were a little busy/distracted/casual/whatever, and ended up waiting a while before we could order anything. Even drinks. I guess they’re students (they’re certainly not pros like at Osvaldo Polletti) and it is a casual kind of place so that’s ok. Continue reading →

Darbar Fine Indian Cuisine on Urbanspoon Housed in the old Darling Mills building, Darbar has a beautiful facade and dramatic interior. Having never been before (except some home delivery a few years ago), we hoped the food would live up to the atmosphere. Continue reading →

Albee's Kitchen on Urbanspoon Tonight my passion for Malaysian food took us to Albee’s Kitchen in Campsie, which I’ve been hearing about for a while. It sounded like just my kind of place – simple decor, straightforward service and all the focus on the food. Continue reading →
